Question: Can a hawk take a small dog?
Answer: Absolutely.
Fact: Worldwide, at least 3-5 unsuspecting small dogs are attacked each year by large birds of prey. Some live to tell to tell the tale, some simply do not.
What can you do about it?: Read this riveting article, Little dog? Gotta watch ‘em like a hawk for a detailed account.
A few weekends ago while visiting my family I saw a hawk with what looked like a squirrel dangling from its talons. I better warn Nana to keep an eye out for Buster.

The Fashion Frenzy for our Furry Friends in Toronto are raising money for canine cancer. This article promoting the event, The Dog Days of Winter, brings up a good point. “The idea of dressing up dogs can be deeply divisive. Some people think it’s cute, others contend it’s traumatizing for the animal—and then there are those who think it’s just plain stupid.” CUTE! CUTE! STUPIDLYAMAZINGLYCUTE! What do you think?
On that note, Cindy wrote to me about her dog Stewie, a Brussels Griffon and Shih Tzu mix. Stewie is named after THE Stewie from the Family guy, which is simply amazing (Please note stellar quotes such as: “oh yes Meg, yes yes, yes everything was going swimmingly for you until this … yes yes this is the thing that will ruin your reputation, not your years of grotesque appearance or awkward social graces or that Felix Ungerish way you clear your sinuses … no no no, its this … do you hear yourself talk? I might kill you tonight …”). With inspiration like that, this small dog is surely destined for great things. It’s confounding that Stewie was “the only one in the litter that no one wanted.” Are people taking crazy pills??? They sure are missing out. I can tell from these photos that he is a gem. And, to top it off he is simply dapper! He understands Spanish and English and like clockwork, every night around 4am he crawls into bed with Cindy to cuddle. He even “did a little dog modeling for Little Pampered Pets.” He’s the one in the army shirt and blue jacket. I will have to do a more through report on Little Pampered Pets in the future. What a site! Moving along, here’s Stewie!!!!

I was shocked and confused by a headline I read this morning, Man pelted with dogs, stabbed by puppy thief. That is just cruel and unusual. “Police said the man was pelted with two puppies as he tried to stop the thief, who escaped with one dog.” The man is in serious but stable condition, no word on how the puppies are doing.

I always feel a little bit uncomfortable when I see people dressing pets up in fur or sheepskin outfits. It just seems wrong. On that note, you better check the labels on your own fur trimmed coats. Fur? Faux Fur? Or Fido’s Fur? Group Says Retailers Selling Dog Pelt Coats. The Humane Society is reporting that after purchasing fur trimmed coats from several well-known brands and retailers they determined the fur to be that of domestic dogs! In some cases, labels listed “raccoon fur” as the material but were actually made from the fur of raccoon dogs, a canine species in Asia. And in one case, a jacket that listed “fake fur” as a material was actually trimmed with coyote fur!

There seems to be a string of recurring headlines these days. #1, dogs being electrocuted and #2, dogs falling down wells. This time in Grant Park in Chicago, a Labrador mix and a Scottish Terrier were killed after stepping onto a charged manhole cover. And, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, a 5-week old puppy found it’s way to the bottom of a well. The fire department managed to fish her out with a net so luckily she is ok.
Mary from Massachusetts wrote to me wanting to share her love for Affenpinschers, which she referred to as “monkey dogs” “because they have a monkey-like face and are quite comical in behavior.”

Perhaps this would be the perfect small dog for me, since I love monkeys and comedy.

Special small dog correspondent Fiza, has been hot on the tail of some exciting small dog news. Cesar dog food hosted an owner/dog look alike contest and featured some of the entrants in several ads. You can view the ads on this site. Here is one for your review:

Fiza also sent me several essential quizzes. The first being: What weird and inbred dog are you? I have taken this quiz twice now and both times and I scored as follows:
Fiza, pointed out two additional quizes, but I haven’t had a chance to take either yet (you have to register to take both of these). When I do, I will surely post the results. What Breed of Dog Are You? Also, What Breed of Dog Are You at Work?

My coworker and I were having a discussion about how we physically react to cute, small pups. To quote her, “i want to smash them with my love.” Amen! I think that’s the most accurate description. Does anyone else feel this way? Maybe we can start a support group?
There’s a Canine Excellence contest going on right now, though it’s only for “AKC registered or eligible for pedigree registry”. Whatever! Maybe I should start my own contest to celebrate small dogs of all kinds? Perhaps Miss Smalldogmerica will become a reality????

It looks like ConEd isn’t the only company who needs to get its act together. An electricity company in the UK, EDF, is under investigation after a dog was electrocuted by a live lamppost. Is it safe for small dogs to walk the streets anymore?
Today, I have a story of intrigue and heroism to share with you. Brenda is a modern day Molly Pitcher, saving pups by night and day. She wrote and told me, “Busta was just a little guy on a message board about one year ago…I called the shelter [in GA] and told them I would adopt him. I faxed the agreement and payment info, and was psyched. They didn’t want to hold him for me until Monday [it was Friday!] because they said that “puppies carry diseases.” I cried like a baby. The woman at the shelter, who must have thought I lost my marbles, told me to try calling a woman in GA that does rescue. I did and she saved his life, hence the name. We had 45 minutes to spare, before his euthanasia time. I was a mess…He was the only one to make it out that day, hence the name BUSTA.” After 2 weeks of “vetting, nursing a nasty kennel cough, which developed into pneumonia” eventually Busta got lined up with a sweet home in Massachusetts where he now lives with his mommies Kim and Barb.

Sometimes I wish I had two adopted mommies in Massachusetts. Somewhere in the Berkshires would be splendid, thanks!

Con Ed really needs to get its act together. I just read an article about another dog being electrocuted in Manhattan. This time a year-old 16-pound Boston terrier named Bob died after walking over an electrified manhole covered. Do you think Con Ed were trying to ruin Valentine’s Day? It’s possible.
I have yet another small dog to introduce you to today. Dr. Anna Rodecki wrote to me talking up her little dachshund Lulu. She told me that Lulu is “a modern young city chic. She is adventurous, loves the outdoors-mostly hunting rabbits… is friendly with people but stays out of trouble.” What particularly struck me is what followed; she “dances ballet and enjoys yoga with her owner.” Ballet? Yoga? Lulu is truly a small dog ahead of the times! What’s next? Does she knit and drink organic, sulfite free wine? Does she have her own blog and drive a hybrid vehicle? From the looks of her, she very well just might! Please welcome Lulu:
